The Great Smelling Bee (Book #2 of Rotten School Series)
by R.L. Stine
Does anyone remember the “Great Brain” series by JD Fitzgerald? The beauty of the Great Brain series (as I recollect) is that it was told by kids about kids and one of the kids was always trying to pull one over on everyone else and his escapades were very clever and well written (to my 10 year old mind) I realize that was the 70’s…. and this is 2011, but I’ve read two of my daughters books so far and I’ve been really disappointed. I will say, atleast “The Great Smelling Bee” didn’t have violence.
The Great Smelling Bee by R.L. Stine wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either and I’m not just saying that because I’m a 46 year old reading a book meant for 10 year olds… I am saying that because there isn’t a single character with a single solitary redeeming quality…. adult or child… however, the book does not have any violence.
I read this book because my kids are reading it… They loved it… but I don’t want them to love this. I want them to love something clever and funny and thought provoking with a real story with characters that have depth and feelings and personalities and most of all that make decisions that have consequences.
