Hothouse Orchid by Stuart Woods.
This was a fast paced and exciting book to read. Start to finish, a one day read for me. I had trouble putting it down and was rewarded with rich animated main story and substories as they intertwine and brush against each other throughout the book.
While I enjoyed the book, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out a couple of things that I felt the book could have done without. For starters, the sex. The characters in this story are all mature professional adults who apparently screw around like rabbits. I’m not kidding! Thankfully the author doesn’t go into great detail (or maybe I blocked that part) but it just seems very unrealistic… Holly Barker, the main character finds a boyfriend the first day on a 4 week vacation AND at the end of the 4 weeks they are moving in together. A parralell story of “Teddy” he starts a relationship on his first day in town with a Realtor… who he cares about, but gets killed AND the same day he finds out she is killed he starts another relationship with the investigating officer AND after 4 weeks, she quits her job to go away with him moving across the country! REALLY?
Personally, I don’t think that either of those relationships did anything more then simply add pages to the book. In fact, personally a little tension and unrequited feelings would have made those relationships more interesting… be that as it may, the book was an enjoyable read
